HISTORY

Dave was born in England in 1951 and immigrated to Maryland, USA in 1960 with his family. Throughout school, Dave’s fascination with mazes developed into an art form. His first maze book was published by Dover Publications in 1976. Shortly after he was hired by Life-Like Products, a model train company, as an illustrator and graphic artist.

Dave became an independent technical illustrator but maintained his interest in mazes, publishing many books and contributing to a variety of publications. In the 1990’s Dave designed and produced casual computer games for companies such as Activision, eGames, and Playnet.

In 1993 Dave met fellow maze maker and Brit, Adrian Fisher, in a Pennsylvania corn field where Adrian designed the first corn maze. In 1999, Dave teamed up with Maize Quest to design and produce corn mazes throughout the US, UK, and Canada. Today, Dave designs around 75 corn mazes each year and invents many other attractions for farm parks.

Working with farm parks, Dave invented games, puzzles, and activities using inexpensive materials such as live bamboo, used tires, concrete pavers, anything that a farm can easily and inexpensively acquire.

Dave then had the idea to bring his expertise in design and production to museums. He convinced the Delaware Children’s Museum to allow him to build the first A-MAZE-D cardboard box maze. After that, Dave attended the ACM trade show in Pasadena, California in 2017 and A-MAZE-D was launched.

Soon after this Dave, and his wife Pam, moved to southern California to be near their daughter, Tessa, who moved to Los Angeles to become a music editor for TV and film. Dave and Pam moved to the high desert, an hour from LA. It was there that Dave met the “Kilted One”, Chris Minsal.

Chris has a background in landscaping and construction. He is also the mayor of Pearblossom, California, a Golden Apple recipient, a community activist, works with children, and is an artist and muralist. Chris embraced the A-MAZE-D concept and contributes to its success. Chris oversees A-MAZE-D installations, bringing his amazing skills and team working leadership to A-MAZE-D projects, leaving Dave to be the aloof maze wizard.

Along with Tessa, in charge of logistics, and a team of skilled craftsmen, supervised by Chris, Dave is free to invent and design more A-MAZE-D creations. We are just getting started.
